LAN-Party on Train

A long overnight Train is the perfect opportunity for a LAN-Party. Especially, when travelling through the less technologically advanced German countryside it is impossible to play a game that needs an internet connection. This brings with itself the perfect opportunity to use the Multi-WAN Features of the GL-MT3000.

Setup

Since there is free Wifi on the train I setup the first Uplink to connect to that wifi. Since the wifi uses a login portal the Auto-Login function can be enabled. I recommend using Factory for the MAC Mode in this configuration so that the DHCP Server on the train does not think that we are a new device every time we reconnect.

As the secondary Uplink i setup my phone in USB-Tethering Mode. Using the uplinks in Failover Mode provided us with the best possible connection. The fast Uplink switching of the GL-MT3000 the connection suprisingly stable.

Our train had a technical defect midway through the trip where the power went out for a minute or two, however since I was able to power the GL-MT3000 over USB from my Laptop we never lost the connection and where able to game on. Thats why the photos are so dark.

We played factorio because we did not really have space for the mouse. Do you konw about any games that do not require a mouse or are LAN-Playable? Feel free to write about them in the comments!

Steam Game Transfer over local Network is a cool feature that enabled us to save bandwidth and increase download speeds. It works by sharing games over the local network from pcs that already have downloaded the packets. For that to work accross accounts you need to enable these settings:

Conclusion

Playing LAN-Games on a Train was a fun idea that turned out easy to execute with the GL-MT3000. It showcases the diversity of usecases in such a little box. Even though gaming on a train was inspiring we ultimatelly concluded that there are more convenient places to have a LAN-Party.
